An exhibition of work by Michael Warrick titled “Perspectives on Darkness and Lightness” will be in the UAFS Windgate Gallery August 17 through September 30. The exhibition includes sculptures from the past decade as well as 20 sketchbook drawings from the last 20 years. The work consist of figurative and portrait motifs as a means of expression.

Michael is a professor of sculpture at the University of Arkansas Little Rock. This summer he completed work on a bronze sculpture titled “Vision” that will be included in the exhibition. “Vision” was purchased by the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith as an addition to the UAFS permanent collection of art and will be installed near the south entrance of the Windgate Art & Design building at the close of the exhibition.

“Vision is a four-foot-tall, 3D-printed portrait cast in bronze mounted on a three-foot tall, faceted, steel base and represents a man in meditation. The front view of the sculpture is in the form of a modeled face with the back side an exact negative of the front but layered in golf leaf. There are many metaphors at work in this piece. Gold is one of the most precious medals on Earth, and its inclusion symbolizes that the mind is one of the most precious gifts a person has. There are also illusions to the negative and positive. The sculpture shows how people may be calm on the outside while a storm is brewing on the inside,” Warrick said.

Funding for the sculpture provided by the generous donors to the UAFS Numa Society.
