About the Juror

Number: Inc is excited to have a wonderful juror for this show – Alice Gray Stites is Vice President and Museum Director of 21c Museum Hotels. In this role, Stites serves as Director and Chief curator of 21c Museum, North America’s first multi-venue museum dedicated solely to collecting and exhibiting art of the 21st century. Located in Louisville, Cincinnati, and Bentonville, 21c was founded by Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson collectors and preservationists who are committed to bringing works of art to the public through innovative exhibitions and programs that integrate contemporary art into daily life. Stites curates site-specific installations, rotating exhibitions, and a range of cultural programming at all 21c Museum Hotels. 21c also collaborates on arts initiatives with artists and other cultural organizations worldwide. Since opening in Louisville in 2006, 21c has presented over 80 exhibitions; recently, Stites has curated Blue: Matter, Mood, and Melancholy; Aftermath: Witnessing War, Countenancing Compassion; Portraits: Pierre Gonnord; Hybridity: the New Frontier; Dis-semblance: Perceiving and Projecting Identity; Wild Card; The Art of Michael Combs, A Fifteen-Year Survey; OFF-Spring: New Generations; and Transporting Transformation: Cuba, In an Out, all of which are included in 21c Museum’s current rotation of exhibitions.

Prior to joining 21c as Chief Curator in 2012, Stites was director of artwithoutwalls, a non-profit, non-collecting public arts organization, and from 1995-2006 was adjunct curator of contemporary art at the Speed Art Museum. Stites has lectured at universities and conferences, including Art Basel Conversations, Leaders in Software and Art, TEDx Stockholm, the University of Louisville, the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts, and was a juror for ArtPrize 2013. She currently serves on the advisory boards of the University of Kentucky and the University of Arkansas. Stites graduated magna cum laude from the University of Virginia, and holds an M.A. from Columbia University.

We hope you will consider submitting your work to this exhibition, and it will be fantastic to see you at the opening on June 27, 2014.
